A key priority for Adelaide is developing as an inclusive city. By this we mean that Adelaide needs to support diversity in its community and to recognise its role as a central gathering place for people to access services and accommodation.
The State Government and Adelaide City Council recognise that each has a role in supporting social sustainability- along with the human and community services, residential and business sectors.
In June 2005, the Premier Mike Rann and Lord Mayor Michael Harbison signed a social sustainability agreement to support action to address social needs in the city and to build on the cooperative approach already in place.
A copy of this Agreement can be found here.
Interagency Partnership Agreement
The signed Agreement is actioned through an Interagency Partnership Agreement developed in January 2006 that identifies the strategic framework, management structure and actions required to deliver social sustainability outcomes in the City. The Agreement is endorsed by the Chief Executives of the partnership agencies, which include:
- Department for Families and Communities (Chair and executive management)
- Adelaide City Council (executive management)
- Department of Health
- Central Northern Adelaide Health Services
- South Australian Police
- Department of Premier and Cabinet
- Social Inclusion Unit
- Department of Education and Children’s Services

Social Sustainability Partnership Action Group
The Agreement resulted in the establishment of a Social Sustainability Partnership Action Group (SSPAG) January 2006 whose members are executive and senior staff from partnership agencies
The SSPAG identified six key strategic outcomes to develop Adelaide as a socially sustainable City and has developed an Implementation Plan for 2006-2007.
SSPAG partner agencies are committed to the Implementation Plan and ongoing development and management of the above programs/actions. They meet quarterly with the Department for Families and Communities and Adelaide City Council maintaining lead agency roles.
