Adelaide now has four universities working within the city with the opening of the University of Ballarat campus in Rundle Mall and the establishment of one of the worlds leading universities, Carnegie Mellon, in Victoria Square.
A key priority for the State Government and Adelaide City Council is for Adelaide to be a learning city. The Government and Council are working together to attract universities and students to Adelaide including supporting Education Adelaide. The Council's aim is to increase the number of students studying in the city to at least 66,000 by 2010.
Adelaide, like other Australian cities, offers high quality tertiary education across the metropolitan area through five Universities and a number of other tertiary education providers.
Unlike most other cities in Australia, Adelaide connects students to the centre of city life by offering four city based universities within a city centre surrounded by a green belt of attractive parklands. The City’s cultural and educational precincts of North Terrace and Victoria Square offer a focus for learning that is unequalled anywhere in Australia and possibly the world.
A Learning City
The notion of a learning city goes beyond attracting international students. Adelaide has joined the International Association of Educating Cities and we are keen to develop Adelaide as a learning city.
Education Adelaide
'Education Adelaide' was established to promote Adelaide's education services overseas. The mission of Education Adelaide is to accelerate the growth of South Australia's education export industry to benefit the State's education providers, the local economy, and the City of Adelaide.

The core objectives of the group are to raise the profile of Adelaide in the international education market place, to be a single focus for a coordinated State education export industry and to support the development of Adelaide as an Education City.
A consortium of State Government, Adelaide City Council and the three universities support Education Adelaide which markets Adelaide and South Australia as an education destination to students outside the State. Over the past four years South Australia has had significant increases in its share of international students, at a rate of around twice the national average for growth in the international student sector.
