Adelaide is a vibrant, attractive and
safe city providing a great living environment and lifestyle
choices that are diverse and stimulating,. It is a city of
unique quality and style for visitors and residents alike,
a place that is welcoming, accessible, walkable and aware
of its heritage.
A living city is the vital hub for culture,
restaurants, cafés, street life and entertainment,
where people are able to mingle, meet and enjoy first class
events, attractions and quality of life.
The State Government and Council aim
to build on and extend the strength of the city as a living,
vibrant city and attract more visitors, residents and tourists
to the city.
North Terrace
North Terrace is the symbolic centre of South Australian history and culture and provides a central place for a wide range of community activities, ceremonies and events of State and national importance. The precincts along the Terrace accommodate a unique concentration of high order government, cultural, educational, health, retail, commercial, hospitality and institutional facilities.
The North Terrace Precincts Redevelopment Project is a joint initiative of the Adelaide City Council and the State Government through the Capital City Committee, an expression of a shared commitment to enhance the performance, amenity and vitality of the northern edge of the City.
The project has evolved from viewing opportunities in new ways - rather than focusing on North Terrace alone, the study area has been broadened and approached in an integrated manner, drawing together urban design, cultural, planning and economic issues in the five distinct precincts along the length of the Terrace.
Following completion of this work, published as the North Terrace Precincts Development Framework in 2000, Concept Designs were prepared for an upgrade of the North Terrace public realm.
Work on Stage One, from Kintore Avenue to Pulteney Street, began in May 2003 and was completed in October 2005 with the commissioning of a major new water feature, ‘14 pieces’ , in the forecourt of the South Australian Museum.
The Stage One work has been very well received by the public and the media and has won a number of National and State design awards.
Stage Two of the project, extending the design ‘template’ established in Stage One from Pulteney Street to Frome Road, commenced on site in August 2006.
When finished in June 2007 the so called ‘Cultural Precinct’ at the heart of the Terrace will have been transformed by new pavements, plantings, lighting and artworks, providing greater access to the cultural institutions and public spaces that support a vibrant public life.
